Become a 911 dispatcher in Wyoming
Wyoming’s dispatcher law connects employment to POST basic certification and gives new employees a two-year qualification window. The Wyoming Highway Patrol provides a distinct employer example with applicant skills testing and evaluated classroom, call-taking and radio phases. Use the state framework alongside the current vacancy for the agency you want.
Put the two-year certification date on the training plan
W.S. 9-1-708 permits employment while completing the dispatcher basic-certification requirement, but certification must be awarded within two years of original employment. Any extension requires a written request from both employee and employer and commission approval; it cannot exceed 210 days. Do not treat an extension as automatic extra training time.
Record the original hire date and ask the agency which approved training program will lead to certificate award. Work backward from the award requirement, leaving time for the employer’s administrative steps. The statute’s outside deadline is not a recommendation to delay training. A center may need you qualified on its systems much sooner to meet its operational and probation expectations.
Understand the Highway Patrol applicant sequence
Wyoming Highway Patrol describes qualification review, orientation and a CritiCall skills assessment. Its page says applicants must pass each assessment module to continue. Later stages include an oral board, psychological evaluation, conditional-offer screening and background investigation. Those are WHP’s published selection details, not a statewide test specification.
Read your actual invitation for the current schedule and instructions. Build practice around accurate data entry, careful prioritization and complete reading rather than memorizing a claimed replica of the employer’s test. Prepare interview examples with a clear situation, the action you took and what changed. Keep employment history and other requested background information consistent across the application stages.
Separate course completion from independent console work
WHP’s published program includes minimum phases of four classroom weeks, two call-taking weeks and eight radio-training weeks. A communications training officer coaches and evaluates the work, and each phase must be completed before independent duty. The page says this program also fulfills POST certification requirements.
These minimum phase lengths describe that employer, not a guaranteed completion date at every Wyoming center. Ask how daily feedback is documented, what proficiency looks like and when a struggling trainee receives additional instruction. Treat corrections as topics for the next supervised session. When considering a county or municipal position, request its own sequence rather than assume Highway Patrol’s course, geography or radio procedures carry over unchanged.
Review prior training and the written compensation offer
The statute permits commission review of comparable previous training, with a written examination and oral interview for the waiver pathway. It also requires employer wages during authorized certification training and reimbursement of reasonable expenses as the employer determines. Prior experience does not create an automatic waiver or define every reimbursable cost.
Bring accurate course records for any equivalency review. For compensation, use the current vacancy and offer: confirm the entry classification, pay during training, travel reimbursement rules, benefits and later progression. Compare shift rotation and overtime expectations before relocating. If a general careers page and a current announcement show different pay, resolve the applicable terms through the hiring instructions before budgeting.
Questions for the hiring announcement
Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.
- Which approved program will produce my POST certificate within two years of original hire?
- Does my vacancy use WHP’s module-by-module assessment process or a different selection method?
- How does this employer evaluate classroom, call-taking and radio phases before independent duty?
- What previous-training review and paid training or travel arrangements apply to my offer?
