Become a 911 dispatcher in West Virginia
West Virginia applicants should distinguish county emergency dispatch from state Watch Center work. The published county-dispatch law includes a nationally recognized 40-hour course within one year, while the state's E-911 Telecommunicator example illustrates a separate incident-monitoring and communications assignment.
Read county-dispatch training in its published scope
Section 24-6-5 addresses county emergency dispatch centers. Its published versions include a nationally recognized 40-hour dispatcher course within one year of employment and additional emergency medical dispatch training. These are continued-employment training provisions, not one statewide pre-employment aptitude examination.
The Legislature's page expressly sets out two versions amended by separate 2020 acts without resolving their legal effect. Have the employing center establish the applicable current medical-call and telecommunicator-CPR requirements. Do not flatten the two versions into an unsupported single checklist or treat county-center language as automatically covering every communications role.
State Watch Center work is a distinct career example
WVEMD describes a Watch Center operating around the clock. Its EMD2500022 bulletin concerns receiving, analyzing and reporting time-critical information across statewide incidents, monitoring lines and networks, and coordinating with multiple organizations. A position titled E-911 Telecommunicator can therefore differ from routine county 911 call taking.
That bulletin closed in May 2025. It is used here to explain the job structure, not to advertise an open vacancy. Start from the current official recruitment page and verify the closing date inside the linked notice; a page retaining an old bulletin does not make the old hiring window current.

Keep applicant testing and systems training separate
The closed WVEMD example required high-school education or equivalent and a year of paid public-contact experience. It separately identified an employment test, the State Police's 40-hour WEAPON class, ongoing WEAPON terminal-operator certification and dispatch training.
Those are requirements of that named employer example. Do not assume every West Virginia county uses the same exam or system-access pathway. If changing roles, document accepted experience and existing course records honestly, then ask the receiving agency which additional credentials and local evaluations remain.

Compare assignments before comparing compensation
Make separate comparison rows for a county PSAP and a state Watch Center position. Include the actual services, jurisdiction, emergency activation obligations, training location and work schedule. Ask whether the first assignment involves telephone response, radio dispatch, information monitoring or a combination.
Use the current vacancy and salary schedule for the entry classification rather than repeat the closed bulletin's historical pay. Prepare examples of relaying accurate information, prioritizing work and maintaining confidentiality. Keep employer probation and training completion separate in your planning, and use approved procedures after hire instead of interpreting practice exercises as operational authorization.
Questions for the hiring announcement
Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.
- Is this county PSAP work or a statewide Watch Center assignment?
- Which current county-dispatch medical and T-CPR provisions does the employer apply?
- Does the linked announcement still have an open application period?
- Which applicant test and WEAPON or other systems credentials are specific to this employer?
