Become a 911 dispatcher in South Carolina
South Carolina's Criminal Justice Academy publishes an employer-linked Basic Telecommunications Officer Training route. Its current program is listed as 36.75 hours over one week, and eligibility includes employment at a South Carolina PSAP. These training admission standards are separate from an employer's hiring selection.
Get hired before planning the academy pathway
SCCJA says applicants for its approved telecommunications training must be employed at a South Carolina PSAP. It lists a recognized high-school education or equivalent, a minimum age of 18, criminal-history standards and evidence of completed ICS-100. The page explicitly says these are training standards and the employer or accrediting body can require more.
Use a vacancy announcement to establish what is required to enter the job. Then ask the agency which documentation it prepares for academy registration. Do not assume that satisfying the academy checklist guarantees selection, or that a general online course replaces SCCJA admission.

Confirm the actual class instructions
The current basic-program summary lists 36.75 hours and one week. Check the class-specific reporting date, attendance instructions and employer arrangements before making travel plans. The linked March 2025 BTOT manual covers student responsibilities, conduct and attendance and notes that additional revisions may be supplied on arrival.
Treat the academy schedule and local field training as separate parts of preparation. Ask what happens before and after the classroom course: local geography, equipment, approved call-processing procedures and evaluated console assignments. A one-week academy description does not imply that the entire employment training period lasts one week.

Use the telecommunications forms and equivalency route
The Academy's forms collection includes a BTOT documentation checklist, telecommunications application and attestation, hire form and a separate Basic Telecommunicator Equivalency Request Form. Those telecommunications records should not be confused with forms intended for sworn law-enforcement officer training.
For an experienced applicant, list your previous courses and credentials accurately and have the receiving agency use the relevant review process. Keep a copy of the final determination. A request for equivalency is not an approved equivalency, and prior training may still leave local systems or medical-dispatch requirements to complete.
Prepare for selection and compare the first-year job
Read the official job notice for any named applicant assessment, interview, background investigation and shift obligations. Practice careful listening, keyboard accuracy and explanations of real work examples. This site offers general skill practice; its results are not an SCCJA credential or a verified replica of a particular South Carolina employer's test.
Compare the entry classification, paid academy time, travel arrangements, benefits and progression conditions. Ask how the training officer records classroom completion alongside local evaluation. Keep hiring, academy admission, course completion and employer probation distinct so that progress in one stage is not mistaken for the final employment decision.
Questions for the hiring announcement
Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.
- Does this PSAP arrange SCCJA registration after appointment?
- Which ICS-100 and training-admission documents must be submitted?
- What reporting and attendance instructions apply to the actual BTOT class?
- Does previous training need a separate telecommunications equivalency review?
