Become a 911 dispatcher in Minnesota
Minnesota applicants should check the employing center's recruitment and its telephone CPR role. State law addresses PSAP CPR training and call-transfer programs; Hennepin County's 2026 recruitment illustrates several accepted experience routes and an agency-specific assessment, rather than a universal Minnesota hiring test.
Understand the center's telephone CPR arrangement
Minnesota Statutes 403.03 requires a PSAP telephone CPR program through trained telecommunicators or transfer to another qualifying PSAP. The transfer option still requires training to identify a person needing CPR. The law addresses evidence-based protocols, continuing education, and ongoing quality assurance; it does not prescribe one applicant aptitude examination.
Ask which arrangement the hiring center uses and what instruction it gives new employees. A personal CPR course is not evidence that you know the center's telephone protocol. Preparation should focus on accurate information gathering and following instructions, while actual medical guidance is learned through authorized training.
A dated Hennepin County experience example
Hennepin County's January 28–February 11, 2026 recruitment is a closed example. It accepted several routes, including dispatch experience, call-center work, first-responder service, or fast-paced customer service; it also listed a Pathways training route with call-center experience. The posting required typing at 40 words per minute with 90% accuracy and invited qualified applicants to CritiCall.
Use those details to recognize relevant experience, then check the current vacancy rather than assuming the same requirements remain open. Describe your duties and duration accurately. If your work combined customer requests, documentation, and changing priorities, explain that combination without claiming emergency-dispatch experience you do not have.

Turn shift and location details into an availability plan
The same Hennepin example required broad shift availability and identified a Plymouth worksite without public transportation. Such details are specific to that recruitment. They show why commuting and availability deserve attention before accepting a role.
For your selected Minnesota center, write down the address, expected arrival times, training schedule, and any on-call or overtime conditions in the current notice. Consider how you will reliably travel after overnight duty. Ask whether the first training phase and later assignments follow different schedules. Do not promise availability that your transportation or other commitments cannot support.

Compare offers without confusing salary ranges
A recruitment can distinguish a targeted hiring range from the full classification range. Read which figure actually applies to an entry offer, then compare guaranteed premiums, benefit deductions, scheduled hours, and progression. Keep the dated salary source with the employer; neither a historical recruitment nor a statewide average is a current promise of pay.
Ask how training progress is evaluated and which call-taking or radio assignments are learned first. Keep state CPR program obligations, employer systems training, and any prior course certificates in separate lines on your checklist. This makes it easier to see what a receiving agency accepts and what remains to be completed.
Questions for the hiring announcement
Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.
- Does this PSAP provide telephone CPR instructions directly or transfer those calls?
- Which experience route in the current recruitment matches my documented work?
- What typing accuracy, assessment and shift requirements apply to this opening?
- How does the offered starting pay relate to the full classification range?
