Become a 911 dispatcher in Indiana
Indiana applicants should use the exact communications employer's announcement. Lake County's official recruiting page accepts applicants without dispatch experience and lists local eligibility and certification expectations. The Statewide 911 Board separately provides professional-development resources for Indiana PSAP staff.
A verified entry route in Lake County
Lake County's recruiting page says previous public safety dispatch experience is helpful but not required. It lists U.S. citizenship, age 18, high school diploma or GED, at least 35 words per minute, background screening, and the ability to obtain specified credentials. The list includes IDACS, CPR, EMD, EFD, and EPD. These conditions belong to Lake County's recruitment.
If your experience is in retail, a call center, reception, or another busy service job, connect it to accurate listening and documentation. Explain how you kept track of competing requests. Do not describe general customer service as prior emergency dispatch experience.
Prepare for the center's actual work
Lake County emphasizes varied shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours. Its page also identifies learning local geography, mapping, CAD, radio, telephone, and information systems as relevant skills. Check the vacancy and assessment invitation for the precise selection sequence.
Use a blank map or public street information to become familiar with the jurisdiction after confirming which communities the job serves. Keep practice scenarios fictional. A useful study note describes how you verify a location or organize information, rather than guessing the employer's incident codes or memorizing another county's dispatch procedures.
Use Board training as professional development
The Statewide 911 Board's training page lists a 2026 mental-health course offered without charge to Indiana PSAPs. It also describes NENA's Center Manager Certification Program and its experience or prerequisite-course admission options. These staff-development offerings do not establish that a new applicant must already hold a management certificate.
Ask the hiring employer how it chooses basic and continuing training, who manages registrations, and whether classroom time is paid. If a course is advertised on a state training calendar, check its intended audience and prerequisites before considering enrollment. An old class listing is not a current reservation.

Compare trainee support and total compensation
For each Indiana center, record starting classification, base pay, scheduled hours, benefits, and conditions for advancement. Keep the salary source attached to the employer and date. Avoid mixing the top rate of an experienced classification with the entry rate of a trainee position.
Training support is also part of the comparison: ask how trainers evaluate progress, how feedback is documented, and how the center supports a trainee after a difficult call. Verify when each required credential must be earned and maintained. The sources here support a specific local route and development resources; they do not establish a uniform Indiana applicant assessment or statewide typing score.
Questions for the hiring announcement
Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.
- Does this employer accept applicants without prior dispatch experience?
- Which local typing evidence and assessment invitation are accepted?
- Who arranges IDACS and any EMD, EFD, EPD or CPR training for this assignment?
- Which Board-supported courses are appropriate after hire, and is attendance paid?
