Become a 911 dispatcher in Georgia

Georgia has a POST communications-officer certification process supported by the employing agency. GPSTC provides basic training for newly employed communications officers. Check current class requirements: official program and course-catalog pages do not currently report identical total hours.

Prepare the agency-assisted certification file

Georgia POST’s communications section directs candidates to apply with help from the employing agency through the POST Data Gateway. Listed evidence includes age, citizenship, education, five years of driver history, background/drug-test results, a physical-exam affidavit, and fingerprints. The candidate and agency attest the application; incomplete files may be returned for correction.

This is a certification-file description, not a request to collect or submit private records through this site. Use only the employer’s authorized process.

Resolve the training-hours discrepancy

GPSTC’s program page describes training within the first six months of employment and summarizes a 48-hour program. Its public catalog currently lists the Basic Communications Officer Training Course at 50 hours. Those figures should not be collapsed into an unsupported statewide total.

Before enrollment, use the actual class listing and prerequisite instructions with the agency training officer. Account for online and campus portions, POST approval, and scheduling. This guide deliberately does not repeat older 40-hour advice as current.

Selection and certification answer different questions

An employer’s applicant assessment and interview occur in its selection process; basic communications training belongs to the post-hire pathway described by GPSTC. Read trainee notices to see what is required at application and what the employer arranges afterward. Do not assume a particular test product, typing threshold, or interview format statewide.

Practice accurate documentation, listening, and clear explanations of your own work examples. Never claim certification on a resume before it has actually been awarded.

Compare the offer and training arrangements

Confirm the entry classification, pay during training, scheduled hours, premiums, and benefits from the official vacancy and pay schedule. Ask how the employer reserves a course place within its required timeline and how field training is evaluated. An advertised classroom course duration does not describe the entire probation period.

Questions for the hiring announcement

Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.

  • Who assists with the POST application and supporting evidence?
  • Which current BCOT listing and online prerequisites apply to my class?
  • How will the agency schedule training within the applicable deadline?
  • What are the local field-training and probation milestones?
