Become a 911 dispatcher in Delaware

Delaware State Police recruits civilian Telecommunications Specialists for county 911 centers and headquarters communications. Its official description includes a computerized multitasking test. This is a verified DSP pathway; other Delaware employers control their own qualifications and selection processes.

Choose the assignment behind the job title

DSP's Communications Section describes three county PSAPs and a Headquarters Communications Center. The specialist description covers SUSCOM, KENTCOM, RECOM, and HQ COMM, with different duty summaries for the county centers and headquarters. Headquarters work includes statewide information systems and operational support; a shared title does not mean an identical console assignment.

When comparing vacancies, record the location and whether you would answer 911 calls, dispatch law enforcement, support information systems, or combine duties. Use the actual announcement to identify the opening rather than treating a general careers page as proof that every location is hiring.

Read DSP's applicant requirements precisely

The published description requires high school graduation with typing or data-entry coursework, clear radio/telephone communication, and availability for scheduled day, night, and holiday work. It identifies a computerized multitasking proficiency test. These are DSP requirements from its description, not statewide rules for all Delaware dispatch jobs.

Keep your education and relevant coursework easy to locate in the application. Prepare examples of recording accurate information while answering questions, or managing several customer requests without losing essential details. Practice feedback here cannot substitute for DSP's assessment result or establish its passing standard.

Use the civilian recruiting channel

DSP's civilian careers page directs applicants to its own online application channel and describes the agency as non-merit. Its specialist section provides a test preparation guide and application link. Follow that channel for DSP civilian work rather than assuming that trooper recruiting instructions apply.

Before submitting, save the recruitment number, chosen location, required attachments, and any assessment instructions. Check your applicant account for changes to the recruitment. For a county or municipal employer, begin again with that employer's official announcement; a DSP test guide is not evidence of another center's process.

Use the posted salary as a dated example

On the verification date, DSP's civilian page lists a specialist salary of $54,830 and a separate $3,000 shift differential. That is an attributed agency example, not a Delaware average or a guaranteed offer. Confirm current compensation and the conditions for any recruitment incentive in the vacancy and written offer.

Build an agency comparison around base pay, required hours, shift arrangements, retirement and health deductions, and the work location. Ask how training affects assignments and when you can progress to independent duties. A longer commute after an overnight shift can matter as much as a small hourly difference.

Questions for the hiring announcement

Use these prompts to resolve what the state framework does not tell you. Record the answer and official source in your private agency comparison.

  • Is this opening for a county PSAP or headquarters communications?
  • Which computerized proficiency test and preparation instructions apply?
  • Which requirements must be documented before application review?
  • What base pay, differential, training schedule and location will my offer specify?
