Start with current dispatcher openings

Use California POST's job-opportunity page and the career pages of city police departments, county sheriff's offices, university police departments, regional communication centers, and other participating agencies. Search several job titles, including public safety dispatcher, police dispatcher, communications operator, emergency services dispatcher, and dispatcher trainee.

A position announcement is more useful than a general testing search because it identifies the employer, deadline, minimum requirements, required documents, and the hiring contact who can confirm the assessment being used.

Questions to ask the hiring contact

  • Is this the California POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery or a different assessment?
  • Is testing limited to applicants for the current recruitment?
  • What date, location, identification, and check-in time apply?
  • Does the agency require a separate typing, data-entry, or oral assessment?
  • Does the agency accept a POST T-score letter from another department, and how recent must it be?
  • What score or ranking method is used to advance candidates?

Understand score-letter portability

POST says a POST dispatcher test score has no statewide shelf life. A candidate may submit the department letter from a previous administration to another employer. The receiving agency still decides whether to accept it, what score is acceptable, and whether it must fall within a locally established time frame.

Keep the complete result letter, not only a screenshot of the number. If an agency accepts prior scores, follow its document-upload or submission directions exactly.

Avoid two common mistakes

  1. Do not assume every California dispatcher examination is the POST battery. State requirements allow the POST test or another job-related assessment of the required abilities.
  2. Do not register for another administration inside the official waiting period. POST requires 30 full calendar days before retesting, even when the second test is offered by a different agency.

A simple search routine

  1. Check POST's current job opportunities and several nearby agency career pages.
  2. Save promising announcements and their closing dates.
  3. Verify the assessment name and local requirements with the listed hiring contact.
  4. Apply through the agency's official process before arranging travel or test preparation.
  5. Keep every notice and score letter in one application folder.
