Dispatcher Written Exam Day: A Practical Preparation Checklist

Three to seven days before

• Re-read the testing notice and confirm the date, check-in time, address, room, parking, and contact number.
• Verify the required identification and whether any materials are allowed or supplied.
• If you need an accommodation, follow the agency's stated process as early as possible rather than waiting until arrival.
• Make a backup travel plan and allow for security or building check-in.
• Complete your last full simulation early enough to review it without cramming the night before.

The evening before

Set out identification, directions, comfortable layers, and anything the agency explicitly told you to bring. Eat and sleep as normally as possible. A late high-intensity study session is unlikely to build a general ability overnight and may reduce attention the next day.

Do not assume the official site will provide the same interface, replay behavior, navigation, note tools, timer, or question count as an independent practice app. Your appointment notice and proctor instructions control.

During the battery

The official battery contains 11 separately timed tests lasting roughly 5 to 15 minutes each, and POST estimates about 2½ to 3 hours for the full administration with a short break. Plan for sustained attention, but focus only on the current section.

1. Read or listen to every section's instructions as if the task is new.
2. Confirm whether notes are permitted; public formats differ on this point.
3. Use the supplied rules rather than rules remembered from practice.
4. If a speeded section becomes difficult, keep working accurately instead of dwelling on one missed item.
5. Use any break to reset physically and mentally rather than reconstructing prior questions.

After the test

Keep the agency's contact information and any confirmation provided. POST says agencies using its dispatcher test must provide results within 30 days. If you receive a score letter, store it with your application records because another department may choose to accept it.

If you plan to retest, verify the official waiting rule and your dates. POST's current applicant FAQ requires at least 30 calendar days between administrations, meaning the next test may be taken a minimum of 31 days after the prior one. Agency-specific application deadlines still matter.
