Unofficial preparation: This article explains public information and original practice strategies. It does not contain secure test material and is not official California POST guidance.

Start with the announcement

Highlight the employer's required qualifications and requested attachments. Create a matching list of evidence from your own history. A resume is not a substitute for completing required application fields. If the portal asks for employment dates, duties, and supervisors, follow its instructions even when those details also appear in an attachment.

Replace adjectives with examples

'Excellent multitasker' gives a reviewer little to evaluate. A better bullet might explain that you tracked customer requests while maintaining an accurate transaction record. Only include a volume or accuracy percentage if you can support it. An honest qualitative result is better than a fabricated metric.

Choose examples showing a process: verifying information, escalating an unresolved issue, documenting a handoff, or learning a new system. Explain the transferable skill without suggesting that customer service and emergency communications are the same work.

Keep credentials precise

List the exact name and status of a real qualification when it is relevant. Do not label a practice-site result as a certified typing score or POST result. If an employer requires a particular certificate, ask which issuers and dates it accepts. Avoid uploading unrelated personal documents to a resume portal.

  • Use consistent employment dates across forms.
  • Check contact details and attachment names.
  • Remove confidential customer information.
  • Save the submitted version for interview preparation.

Rehearse the resume

Be ready to explain each important bullet aloud. If you cannot describe your role and the outcome clearly, revise the wording. The resume should open a conversation about what you have done and what you are ready to learn, rather than force you to defend an inflated claim.
