Make a milestone list

Ask which stages you must complete, who signs off each one, and where the expectations are documented. A center may use several training phases or separate qualifications for assignments. The terms used in another agency's online discussion may not match your employer's terms.

Separate coursework from workplace performance

POST's candidate information describes required basic coursework for participating California agencies. Workplace training also teaches local procedures and systems. Passing a course does not itself establish that you are cleared for every local task.

Likewise, an employee who can work a particular assignment may still have outstanding employment probation requirements. Ask HR or your supervisor about the actual status rather than inferring it from a trainer's informal comment.

Ask how progress is evaluated

Clarify the frequency of feedback, documentation, and any process for addressing a missed objective. Do not treat an estimated training duration as an entitlement to release on that date. Focus on the performance criteria and ask what evidence shows that a skill is improving.

  • What are the current phase objectives?
  • Which qualifications remain incomplete?
  • How are concerns communicated?
  • Where can I find probation and training policies?

Keep your study plan tied to the phase

At the end of each review, identify a small number of priorities and approved practice options. Studying everything at once can obscure the skill being evaluated. If you receive conflicting guidance, ask the designated training contact to clarify the current standard before changing your approach.

Dispatcher Training vs. Probation FAQ

Does finishing training mean I passed probation?

Not necessarily. Ask your employer which milestones have been completed and whether additional probationary requirements or evaluations remain.
